The women's water polo team dove into the new season this past weekend at the UC San Diego Triton Tournament and emerged victorious.

"I'm very happy with this weekend," said Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo, who picked up his 100th career win over the weekend. "We played better in each game of the tournament."

In the season opener, No. 5-ranked Long Beach State (3-1) defeated Cal Baptist, 7-4 and then picked up a second win against UC Santa Barbara, 7-5, ending Saturday in the winners' bracket.

On Sunday, the 49ers fell to No. 4-ranked Loyola Marymount, 10-7, but battled back in game four, inching out San Diego State, 7-6.

Junior Alison Braden and senior Robyn Gordin both scored two goals against Cal Baptist. Drue Wawrzynksi, Tara Campbell and Laura Branch all contributed to the win by scoring one goal each.

The winning attitude carried over into the second game as the team took on UC Santa Barbara. Junior Cassie Azevedo and Gordin led The Beach with two goals apiece and Jessica Levin, Wawrzynksi, Campbell and Braden all scored one goal each.

Goalie Bri Hawkins made 12 saves for LBSU.

The Beach began Sunday against Loyola. Unfortunately, the 49ers fell in defeat, 10-7.

Azevedo scored three goals against the Lions. Gordin added two, while Jackson and Levin both picked up one.

The 49ers bounced back in their second game on Sunday, breaking the Aztecs' hearts, 7-6.

Leading the team with two goals each were Azevedo, Wawrzynksi and Levin.
