The
49ers' softball team got the season off
on the right foot as they went 4-1 at the
Aztec Invitational in San Diego this past
weekend.
"It
was a good test," Head Coach Pete Manarino
said. "I'm definitely pleased by the
weekend we had."
Long
Beach State opened up the floodgates on
offense by outscoring their opponents 35-12
in the five games played over the weekend.
The
onslaught began in the first game of the
season against UC Riverside as the 49ers
thumped the Highlanders by a score of 13-2,
which was highlighted by a six-run third
inning for LBSU.
Due
to the lopsided score, the game was called
after five innings.
Senior
pitcher Meredith Cervenka recorded her first
win of the year and got more than enough
help on offense from freshman Kristen Miller,
who had three hits, three runs and four
RBIs. Senior Lauren Johnson went 2-4 with
four RBIs.
In
the second game on Friday, freshman Jessica
Beaver scored what would be the winning-run
via a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth
inning as the 49ers went on to beat UC Davis
5-4.
Senior
Marcel Torres struck out seven on her way
to her first win of the season, and junior
Melanie McCauley went 2-2 with two RBIs.
On
Saturday, McCauley continued her hot-hitting
as she went 3-4 with a home run, two RBIs
and three runs scored to help lead LBSU
to an 8-1 win over St. Mary's. Torres struck
out six, while allowing just one hit in
3.2 innings pitched to improve to 2-0 on
the season.
In
the second game of the day, the 49ers were
dealt their first loss of the season by
host San Diego State. SDSU took a 3-0 lead
into the bottom of the seventh courtesy
of solo home runs by Danielle Touhey and
Taryin Casillas, who also added an RBI single.
The
49ers rallied in the bottom of the seventh
with singles by junior Tifffanie Wedell
and Johnson. Sophomore Kourtnee Gervasi
added a two-run double, and had the tying
run reach third. That was as close as the
49ers got as reliever Celena Velasquez came
in for SDSU to strike out the final batter
and hold the 3-2 victory.
The
49ers bounced back and beat UC Davis 7-2
for the second time in the tournament on
Sunday.
The
game was tied at two until the top of the
seventh when LBSU erupted, scoring five
runs to put the game out of reach.
Cervenka
(2-1) got the victory after allowing one
run on two hits.
