49ers' women's tennis team rumbles past Cal State Northridge Matadors

The Beach hit the Campus Courts Saturday afternoon and served the Matadors a ticket back to Northridge with a 5-2 victory.

The No. 57-ranked 49ers' women's tennis team improved their record to 2-1, 1-0 Big West, while Cal State Northridge dropped to 5-2.

In doubles play, The Beach faced three hard-hitting sets against the Matadors, but earned the doubles point by winning at the second and third courts. The lone loss came at court one where Nicole Bouffler and Claudia Argumendo fell in defeat to Yu Yu Myinttun and Silvia Gutierrez.

The 49er tandem of Bouffler and Argumendo allowed a 7-2 lead slip away to the CSUN duo, allowing the visitors to go on a seven-game streak to take the match 9-7.

At court two, LBSU's Alanah Carroll and Stephanie Benson beat Canna Furuta and Yasuyo Hashimoto by a score of 9-8 after a back and forth battle.

Nicoletta Ratiu and Racheal Porsz came from behind to win 8-6 over CSUN's Kasia Krasinska and Kanykey Koichumanova at court three.

Sophomore Sandra Rocha, who usually pairs with Bouffler at the first doubles court and plays singles at court four, was unable to compete Saturday due to a family emergency. Without Rocha, the 49ers moved up Porsz and Ratiu in singles and inserted Argumendo in at the sixth singles court.

Subsequent to winning the doubles point, the 49ers clinched the match with four singles match wins. After a disappointing loss in doubles play, Bouffler bounced back against Guiterrez, winning 6-0, 6-2, and improving her record to 2-1 this spring. The senior from Australia was also named Big West Tennis Athlete of the week for Jan. 24-30.

Bengson rolled past CSUN's Myinttun at court three, winning 6-3, 6-0. At court four, Porsz had a close first set against Hashimoto, but easily swung past her opponent in the second set to win the match 7-6, 6-1. At court six, LBSU's Argumendo dominated Krasinska 6-1, 6-1.

The two losses for the 49ers came at the courts two and five. Carroll lost 6-4, 6-0 to Furuta. Koichumanova defeated Ratiu in a heartbreaking three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 10-7.

The 49ers are 17-12 all-time against CSUN. Last season, LBSU won at CSUN, 6-1, and with Saturday's victory, The Beach have topped the Matadors in six straight matches.
