Men's golf hits bottom of the field in Tucson

The Long Beach State men's golf team teed off the second half of their season at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate at the Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson earlier this week and landed in the bottom of the drink.

The tournament began on Monday and after the end of round one, the 49ers were tied for 15th place.

By the end of round two Tuesday afternoon, LBSU dropped to 16th place, leaving them at the bottom of the scoreboard.

Ryan Wood led the way for the 49ers and tied for 46th place in the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate with a 3-over-par 74. Ryan Panichpakdee was up in the polls as well, improving from his first round ranking of 57th to 55th, with a 4-over-par 75.

The leader after the first round of play was Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares with a 5-under-par 66. His closest competition was Spencer Levin of New Mexico, who was six strokes behind him, followed by Henry Liaw of Arizona in third.

LBSU finished the tournament in last place at the end of three rounds of play, with a combined team score of 907 (312-299-296).

Wood concluded the tournament tied for 46th place with a score of 221 (73-74-74) and Panichpakdee shot a 2-over-par 73 and tied for 56th place (75-75-73). Junior James Logeman finished with a 3-over-par 74 and tied for 72nd place with a final score of 232 (81-77-74). Sohomore Brett Lederer shot a 4-over-par 75 and tied for 74th place, and shot 233 (85-73-75).

In other play, Canizares of ASU won the individual crown by one-shot over New Mexico's Levin with an even-par 71 and a total score of 202.

New Mexico won the team championship with a total score of 840 (289-280-271) and finished the invitation with three players in the top ten.

The 49ers will next play Feb. 25-27 in Waihiawa, Hawaii at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Leilehua Golf Course.
