Rain
dampened and caused the cancellation of
Friday's match against San Diego State,
but on sunny Saturday morning, The Beach
came out swinging against Northern Arizona
University at the Campus Court and won 7-0.
With
the victory, the 49ers' women's tennis team
improved their early season record to 1-1,
while the NAU Lumberjacks fell to 0-3.
"The
team did well," 49ers' Head Coach Jenny
Hilt-Costello said. "It's the beginning
of the season. We have a lot of work to
do, but we are coming together nicely."
In
doubles play, No. 58-ranked LBSU came out
strong, winning all three matches, which
gave them the doubles point.
At
the number one court, the 49ers' tandem
of Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha won
easily against Ashley Dille and Susan McClelland
by a score of 8-1.
At
the number two court, Stephanie Bengson
and Alanah Carroll rolled past the Lumberjack
duo of Katie Schurr and Julie Schmandt 8-2.

The
toughest match came at the number three
court, where Krystina Katayama and Nicoletta
Ratiu of LBSU battled back-and-forth against
NAU's Sheena Lister and Georgie Mills. The
set was tied at 6-6 when the 49ers' tandem
controlled the deuce point. The point gave
them the momentum that led to the match
win by a score of 9-8.
In
singles play, the 49ers swept NAU in all
six matches, winning five of the six in
straight sets. The exception came at the
number two singles court where LBSU's Carroll
faced McClelland.
Carroll
won in three sets, 6-1, 4-6 and a tie-breaking
third set by a score of 10-7.
Bouffler,
ranked No. 113 in the country in singles
play, won easily against Schmandt, 6-1,
6-0.
At
the number three court, newcomer Stephanie
Bengson had an impressive win over NAU's
Dille, 6-0, 6-3.
Likewise,
Rocha, Ratiu and Rachal Porsz were all triumphant
in their singles matches.
Despite
easily rolling over NAU, Hilt-Costello still
feels her team still has much to work on.
"Our
singles game is coming around," she
said.
Saturday's
win over NAU tied the all-time series between
the two clubs at 4-4. LBSU has been victorious
in the last two meetings against the Lumberjacks.
Friday's
cancelled game against San Diego State has
been rescheduled for Feb. 10.
The
49ers will remain at home, as they host
the Cal State Northridge Matadors on Saturday
at noon at the Campus Court.
