Long Beach State freshman Kay Hoey qualified
for the NCAA Championships after shooting
a 74 in Saturday’s final round of
the NCAA West Regionals at New Mexico State
University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
Hoey will participate in the NCAA Championships
as an individual at the Sunriver Resort
in Sunriver, Ore. May 17-20.
“I’m really exited,” Hoey
said. “My mental game has really been
good and I’ve been putting everything
together.
I’ve been able to get myself out of
trouble. It’s nice to be playing well,
especially since it’s coming at the
end of the season.”
Hoey finished in fifth place on Saturday
with a 219 (74-71-74). Hoey was 16th after
Thursday’s round, but on Friday Hoey
shot a one-under-par 71 and stood at 145
(74-71) to move to third place at the end
of the day.
After Friday’s round, Hoey stood three
shots behind individual leader, junior Sophia
Sheridan of UC Berkeley, and one shot behind
freshman Dewi Schreefel of USC. Hoey feels
that her overall-game is her biggest asset.
“I think it has been the entire package.
I was hitting it farther which gave me an
advantage over some of the other girls.
Everything was just coming together.”
Hoey finished behind Sheridan who took first
place at the end of Saturday’s round
with a 212, followed by Violeta Retamoza
of Tennessee at 217. Sophomore Rachel Newren
of BYU came in third with a 218 (69-78-71)
and Schreefel finished in fourth place with
a 218 (73-71-74).
Junior Sofie Anderson of Cal along with
freshman Laura Luethke of Fresno State,
senior Johnna Nealy of Oregon and Oklahoma
State’s junior Karin Sjodin finished
in a four-way tie for sixth place with a
220. And freshman Amie Cochran of UCLA shot
a 222 to round out the top 10.
In the team competition, UCLA and Tennessee
finished tied for the title with a score
of 889 while Cal took third and USC finished
in fourth place.
Hoey is adding to an already impressive
freshman campaign as she won the Oregon
Duck invitational and the Fresno State Invitational
in late March and early April respectively.
Hoey also finished tied for eighth place
at the Peg Barnard Intercollegiate at Stanford
and placed fifth at the Big West Championships.
Hoey has been a true mark of consistency
as she has finished in the top 10 in nine
out of the 10 tournaments she competed in
this year.
In addition, not only was Hoey named the
Big West Golfer of the Year, she was also
the league’s Freshman of the Year
and was the conference’s Female Golfer
of the Month for October, March and April.
