The
Long Beach State men's volleyball team ended
the regular season on a high note as they
topped No. 1-ranked UCLA and UC Irvine by
duplicate 3-1 scores.
The
49ers defeated UCLA on Senior Night last
Thursday in front of one of the largest
crowds in 49er history (1,886 fans) in The
Walter Pyramid. The game scores were 30-27,
24-30, 31-29 and 31-29 in favor of LBSU.
The Beach finished the regular season with
a record of 20-9, 14-8 Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation.
Junior
outside hitter Robert Tarr recorded his
first double-double of the season with 10
digs and a match-high 28 kills. Junior setter
Tyler Hildebrand posted 61 assists, six
digs and three kills. The 49ers out-dug
the Bruins, 46-40.
The
turning point in the game came in the third
match with the game tied 1-1. With LBSU
down 29-28, a Tarr kill tied the game at
29-29. After a Bruins attack error, a kill
by senior opposite/middle blocker Yassir
Sliti gave LBSU the 31-29 win.
Game
4, like game 3, would end in the same score
and be just as close and intense. The 49ers
edged the Bruins at the end with a kill
from sophomore Teddy Liles, followed by
a double-block from junior middle Duncan
Budinger and Sliti to end the game and give
the 49ers the win.
LBSU
finished their regular season by defeating
UC Irvine on Saturday. The game scores were
30-26, 30-23, 29-31 and 30-25. Tarr posted
19 kills while Sliti tallied 16 kills and
four blocks of his own in the win. The 49ers
hit for a .347 attack percentage (54-20-98)
and out-dug the Anteaters 23-15 on the day.
LBSU
will travel to Hawaii to face the No. 5-seeded
Warriors in the MPSF Quarterfinals on Saturday.
