Both
the Long Beach State men's and women's crew
teams had strong showing on April 2 at the
Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Invitational
in Vancouver, Wash.
In
men's racing, the LBSU Men's Varsity 4 took
first place with a time of 7:47.90. The
Women's Varsity 4, with a time of 8:33.10,
edged out Oregon State University who finished
in 8:33.55. And the Women's Novice 8 came
in second in their race behind Gonzaga with
a time of 8:21.62.
Last
weekend, the men raced in Newport against
Orange Coast College and UC Irvine, and
the women raced UC Irvine and Chapman. The
Men's Varstiy 4 destroyed UCI by a whopping
50 seconds to win the gold, the Men's Novice
8 finished fifth while the Men's Novice
4 took third place. The Women's Varsity
4 took gold along with the Women's Novice
8A team, while Women's Novice 8B took silver.
After
struggling at the start of the season, the
Men's Novice teams are coming around.
"They're
finally starting to realize how much work
it takes to be fast," Men's Head Coach
Scott Strong said.
This
cannot be said for the men's varsity team.
The varsity team has the capability to be
in the finals and win the National Championship,
Strong said. The biggest strength of the
men's varsity team is their strong work
ethic that includes rowing about 25,000
meters a day, said Strong.
The
crew team will be in Newport Beach this
Saturday to compete in the Newport Regatta.
