Truths
and parking structures
Your
mother seems to have taught you some important
lessons, please allow me to teach you one
more. When you write an article referring
to President Robert Maxson as not being
truthful, do some more research. Your article
points to Maxson and Tom Bass as perpetrators
of a scheme to mislead students on this
campus. Wrong again! Two years ago, Parking
and Transportation Services recommended
to Maxson that he raise parking fees, he
declined. The university relied on bond
money to fund the structure.
However,
to secure the bonds, it was necessary to
see an increase in parking revenue to begin
the project. Maxson wanted to delay increasing
the fees as long as possible while still
securing the bond money. He decided to seek
the advice of students in making the decision.
He consulted the President's Advisory Committee,
the Associated Student's Senate, the Student
Fee Advisory Committee and even the Online
Forty-Niner Editorial Board. All of these
groups endorsed the idea of a parking fee
increase to begin in spring 2005.
This
is impressive considering the standard in
the California State University system is
to raise fees once the plan for a new structure
is approved. Students have a voice on this
campus, they have input into almost all
of the decisions that will affect students.
This has been true because of one man, the
person whom you refer to as dishonest. He
is also a large part of the reason our fees
overall are the lowest in the CSU system.
So if you are still angry, and you still
have "hate" inside you, I suggest
you look into participating in the student
government elections April 12-14, 2005.
Here you can elect the students who will
be making these types of decisions on your
behalf.
It
is not uncommon that students lack information
about student shared governance. You might
consider looking into the structure that
is in place to protect students. This would
be advisable before attacking a man that
has assured you many of the things you take
for granted on this campus Online. I hope
that you continue to learn in this institute
of higher education and that you will "promise"
me to completely research your next journalistic
endeavor so that students will not be misled.
