Senate makes new appointments, holds birthday celebration for senator

The Associated Students' Senate hall, normally a somber room, was much more relaxed Wednesday. The usual issues of Senate business were broken up with new appointments and happy announcements.

First of the appointees was Katie Sullivan, who was quickly approved as a new associate justice for the AS Judiciary.

Sullivan, who is a political science major, talked about her move to the judiciary in a brief pre-meeting interview.

"It's always kind of been my hope to get a little more involved in school," she said. "I've been working my way up through organizations and gaining a little more familiarity [with the school]. I was actually approached about a month ago, and was told that there were going to be some openings in the judiciary. I have a few friends in the government and they thought it would be something that I'd be good at."

Sullivan, who is involved with the Orange County Big Brothers Big Sisters program, currently works for the Orange County district attorney. She has been involved in law for some time, though.

"Law has been something that I've wanted to do since high school. I'm involved in a law society here—I'm an officer there," she said.

Concerning her impending work in the Judicary, she said that "it's something that can open up so many opportunities in life. It's something I feel that is going to be a challenge every day and because of the nature of my personality, it's going to open up a lot of doors."

She also talked about her goals for the judiciary, specifically focusing on her hope to increase its visibility.

"The judiciary has been a branch that has been overlooked, and not a lot of students are knowledgeable about it," said Sullivan. "I think that I would like to take it upon myself and the other justices to make it something where students of this campus, this large student population, know that they can come to us with their grievances and that it's a place where they can be heard. I know Senate does that, and our executives offices do that, but also we're there for them."

The second appointee was Cestmarie Hernandez, a journalism and theatre major. Hernandez was named as the senator for the College of Liberal Arts.

In lighter news, large bunches of balloons were tied to two chairs in the hall, and the antechamber had been stocked with juice, cupcakes, brownies and other snacks. The food was provided for a pre-meeting celebration of Senator Melissa Duque's 21st birthday.

Senator Noelle Bautista-Kinley, of the College of Liberal Arts, announced that she had been accepted, through her participation in a scholarship program, into Yale's doctoral program.
