State Long Beach's President's Commission
on the Status of Women (PCSW) is seeking
nominations for the 2005 Advancement of
Women Awards.
The
PCSW, which has been in existence since
1989, will confer the awards to the student,
the staff/administrator and the faculty
member who best exemplifies the tireless
effort needed for the advancement of women.
The candidates will be honored on the merits
of scholarship, teaching, organizational
work, campus community service and/or any
other form of support for women at CSULB.
"This
will be the third consecutive year that
the commission has given this type of award,"
said Elisabeth Novack, PCSW awards committee
chair. "The commission has focused
its work on improving circumstances and
opportunities for the women who study and
work here."
President
Robert C. Maxon has made it his duty to
honor each of the recipients in person with
a plaque. Their tribute will not stop there,
however, their accomplishments will also
be recognized at the Spring Women's Research
Colloquium on April 28, 2005. And in addition,
each winner's achievement will be cemented
on a perpetual plaque displayed in the Women's
Resource Center for all future 49ers to
see.
People
such as 2003 winner and current CSULB staff
member, Lynne Coenen, who explained that
her efforts along with the efforts of the
other past winners, are motivated from within.
"We
do this work because we believe in what
we do," she said. "We do it because
we have a passion for it."
As
for winning the award, she states she was
and is "immensely honored." And
since someone else nominated her, she was
also surprised.
Other
past winners include students Cecille Basila
and Monique Comminey, faculty members Patricia
Rozee and Rosa Moreno-Alcaraz, and staff
administrators Bonnie Myers, Lily Gossage
and Jean Houck.
Although
all past winners have been female, the PCSW
states clearly on the CSULB Web site that
both males and females are eligible for
the award.
The
PCSW accepts nominations that include a
detailed letter that describes the significance
of the work the candidate has done. Nomination
forms are available at www.csulb.edu/org/women.
The deadline is March 18, 2005 and all nominations
should be mailed to the Women's Resource
Center, LA-3, Room 105, or e-mailed to mgchavez@csulb.edu.
