A
little rain didn't stop Gamma Phi Beta sorority
from hosting their Tarts and Hearts Ball
to raise money for the Tsunami Disaster
Relief Fund Tuesday night.
Red
and pink decorations filled the area behind
the Gamma Phi Beta house while a disc jockey
played music to entertain guests as they
enjoyed home-baked cookies and conversations
with friends.
Nancy
Brad, Gamma Phi Beta's public relations
vice president, had been planning this fundraiser
for almost three months.
Brad,
along with others, decided red and pink
would be festive colors because February
is associated with Valentine's Day.
Although
their regular philanthropy is Campfire USA,
for which they have an upcoming fundraiser,
Gamma Phi Beta decided to donate the money
raised at this particular event to the Tsunami
Disaster Relief Fund.
"We
wanted to branch out and donate to a new
charity," said Heather Bailey, Gamma
Phi Beta's president. "We thought it
was an important issue right now in the
world."
The
sorority has joined the community of people
donating money to help those affected by
the disastrous tsunami in Southeast Asia.
Gamma
Phi Beta, along with other members of the
academic community, realizes the importance
of helping others in need and plans to hold
the Hearts and Tarts Ball every February.
"We
will choose a new charity based on yearly
needs," Bailey said.
In
addition to Gamma Phi Beta, all of Cal State
Long Beach's fraternities and sororities
and many other campus clubs raise money
for various charities and causes.
