Cal
State Long Beach President Robert Maxson
has announced his impending retirement.
Issued in the form of a campus-wide e-mail,
Maxson stated that he plans to retire this
year.
At
the request of California State University
system Chancellor Charles Reed, Maxson will
remain in the position of president until
a successor is chosen. A new president is
expected to be named before the end of the
year.
Maxson,
who earned a doctorate at Mississippi State
University in 1970, was formerly the president
of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
During his time at UNLV, campus enrollment
rose by 10,000 students, and 17 new buildings
were constructed.
When
he began his presidency at CSULB in the
spring of 1994, he brought with him a level
of dedication that saw CSULB rise to prominence
within the system. The campus, which is
well known throughout the state of California,
has become home to a variety of projects
which Maxson played a key role in developing.
Most notable among these is the President's
Scholars Program.
The
Presidents's Scholars Program, started under
Maxson in 1995, is a privately funded scholarship
program that provides four-year awards for
tuition, housing and other expenses at CSULB.
Recipients must be high school valedictorians
or National Merit Scholarship finalists.
The
program's success has led to variations
on it being created at other campuses in
the CSU system.
Maxson,
who is currently on the Board of Directors
at the International City Bank, plans to
remain active during his retirement.
"I
am not retiring completely," he said
in his announcement. "I do have professional
plans for the future."
He
did not state if these plans include teaching.
Maxson who has regularly taught a leadership
class at CSULB, and was a university professor
earlier in his career, said that he "always
considered [him]self an educator first."
