Upon
entering the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles
last Wednesday, audiences for the "'One
Tree Hill' Concert Tour" filed into
their seats to enjoy a very entertaining
and well-played performance by four up-and-coming
acts.
Sponsored
by Mark Cosmetics, the concert tour features
artists including Bethany Joy Lenz and Tyler
Hilton (who both have recurring roles on
"One Tree Hill"), "The Wreckers,"
a duet made up of Grammy-winner Michelle
Branch and fellow musician Jessica Harp,
as well as Gavin DeGraw, who wrote and performed
the show's theme song.
Sponsoring
a concert tour based on a television show
is ironic because it mirrors the story line
in the show where Haley (Lenz) leaves her
young husband Nathan (played by Chris Lafferty)
to go on tour with "The Wreckers"
and Chris Keller (Hilton).
Recently,
crossover stars who became famous through
television and move over to music use a
lot of instrumentals and computer-generated
sounds to mask mediocre vocal ability (think
Lindsay Lohan). However, Lenz broke the
mold of stereotypical crossover musicians
with amazing vocal, guitar and piano skills.
Although
her set was short, it was dynamic in quality.
Hilton,
who began as a musician and was given the
opportunity to showcase his talents on "One
Tree Hill," was equally as entertaining.
His album, "The Tracks Of," is
available in stores now.
"The
Wreckers," recently establishing themselves
as an official duet, played a mixture of
new songs from their upcoming album, "Stand
Still, Look Pretty," and a small selection
of songs from Branch's previous albums.
The mood of the group is much more country
since the addition of Harp. It helps the
artists to appeal to a larger audience.
Their hit song, "The Good Kind,"
was debuted on a February episode of "One
Tree Hill."
Headlining
the tour was Gavin DeGraw. During his set,
he played songs from his recently released
hit album, "Chariot." DeGraw proved
to be more than a simple musician by showcasing
his piano, guitar and singing abilities
as well as his knack for comedy.
While
talking to the audience between songs, he
told a joke about a guy who wanted to hit
on a girl in a bar, but when she left, he
decided to go talk to one of her friends.
As it turned out, he was that guy and the
friend wasn't very nice but "sometimes
you need a few drinks to fall in love,"
he sang, as his joke turned into an amusing
little jingle about settling for the next-best
thing and sometimes needing a beer or two
to do it. Not only can DeGraw sing, he's
pretty funny too.
The
"'One Tree Hill' Concert Tour"
is traveling throughout the United States
with select cities featuring DeGraw and
others where Lenz will not be appearing.
