Music is in the air with tons of March concerts

By Brian Spiegel

"In like a lion, out like a lamb." That is what they say about March weather. Well, let's forget about the weather and focus on the music here, people. When it comes to March concerts, there aren't any lambs in sight…well, unless there is a really cool after party somewhere. Here are my personal picks for the best shows that March has to offer.

3/ 05 Home Grown, Melee, The Kinison, Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer at House of Blues Anaheim
All right, I'll admit it, I've never even heard of Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer but, dammit, with a name like that how can you go wrong?

3/09 Gatsby's American Dream, Circa Survive, Bear Vs. Shark at Chain Reaction
Shhh, I'll tell you a secret; seeing Bear Vs. Shark for $8 at a small venue might be your best investment since buying all that stock in those Paris Hilton Web sites.

3/09 "The One Tree Hill Tour" featuring Michelle Branch and Gavin DeGraw at The Wiltern LG
This could be the best TV-related tour since the "Hogan's Hero's Tour" featuring Bob Crane. No, wait, that was just a videotape.

3/11 Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society at The House of Blues Anaheim
This guy is so metal that he's 20 percent titanium. By the way, do you think there was ever a discussion about making the band the Turquoise Label Society?

3/11 The Honda Civic Tour with Maroon 5 and Phantom Planet at Universal Amphitheatre
Did you know? Your girlfriend is fantasizing about Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine right now.

3/12 KCRW's "A Sounds Eclectic Evening" featuring Coldplay, Café Tacuba, Nellie McKay and more at Universal Amphitheatre
This show has been delayed for so long that Vivaldi was the original headliner.

3/14 Ska Is Dead Tour II Featuring Voodoo Glow Skulls, MU330 and more (consult www.skaisdead.com for venues)
If ska is dead, then why are they on their second tour? I guess it's more of an ironic tour name then anything.

3/18-3/19 Flogging Molly, Hot Water Music and The Riverboat Gamblers at The House of Blues Anaheim
You're not going get a much better lineup than this. The Riverboat Gamblers might be the best new act that corporate radio ain't playing right now.

3/18 The Reverend Horton Heat and Trainwreck at The Henry Fonda Theatre
Man, when you have Flogging Molly and The Reverend playing in the same city on the same night you know that the stars have aligned.

3/21 The Doves at The El Rey
I've heard the new Doves album and all that I have to say is run, don't walk to this show. It will sell out. Actually, wait for me to get tickets, then you can run to get them, OK?

3/21 Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard at The Pantages
Yes, I know that Dylan is a national treasure but I hear that lately his live shows have turned into a sort of train wreck. Save your money and go buy a greatest hits CD.

3/22 Rainer Maria and The Thermals at The Knitting Factory
Rainer Maria is the best female-fronted rock band around, and the Thermals are pretty cool themselves. Plus, this is your chance to see where Ashlee Simpson performed her first live concert!

3/24-25 Stars at The Troubadour
Note: Potential red-hot Canadian band alert!

3/26 The Decemberists at The Glasshouse
You…must…go…to…this…show…

3/31 Handsome Boy Modeling School at The House of Blues Anaheim
Honestly I don't know how they are going to re-create their music especially with their albums containing so many guest stars. You're probably looking at some sort of a disc jockey set here, which should still be pretty cool.
