With
over 90 Grammy categories (which include
Best Hawaiian Album, naturally) it would
take pages and pages to comment on all the
races going on. I don't think the editors,
or the readers would like that. Instead
I took a few of the biggest races and gave
you my opinion on what's going on. I know
you didn't ask for it, but darn it, you're
going to read it and casually enjoy it.
Record
of the Year
Nominees:
Black Eyed Peas "Let's Get It Started,"
Ray Charles and Norah Jones "Here We
Go," Green Day "American Idiot,"
Los Lonely Boys "Heaven," Usher
feat. Lil' Jon and Ludacris "Yeah."
Who
should win: Winners of this category
should have something to say. While "Let's
Get It Started" is ridiculously catchy,
I have to put my support behind "American
Idiot" because it has
the most to say out of any of the five.
Who
will win: Put recently deceased Ray
Charles together with Grammy darling Norah
Jones and, bam, you got a winning combination.
Oh, I think Usher peaked a bit too early,
so I don't think he has a chance.
Album
of the Year
Nominees:
Ray Charles "Genius Loves Company,"
Green Day "American Idiot," Alicia
Keys "The Diary of Alicia Keys,"
Usher "Confessions," Kanye West
"The College Dropout."
Who
should win: "American Idiot"
is a frickin' masterpiece. Nothing even
comes close to it.
Who
will win: On one hand you have Usher,
the hottest artist of the year. On the other
hand you have a legend that had a popular
movie made about him this year. Oh, did
we mention he recently died? He's a lock.
Song
of the Year
Nominees:
John Mayer "Daughters," Alicia
Keys "If I Ain't Got You," Kanye
West "Jesus Walks," Tim McGraw
"Live Like You Were Dying," Hoobastank
"The Reason."
Who
should win: "The Reason"
is a purely perfect pop song, but "Jesus
Walks" has some real teeth. The first
mainstream rap song in quite a while to
carry a message.
Who
will win: Usually sappy songs tend
to have an in here. "Daughters"
is too sappy so I'm going to give this one
to "Live Like You Were Dying."
Best
New Artist
Nominees:
Los Lonely Boys, Maroon 5, Joss Stone, Kanye
West, Gretchen Wilson
Who
should win: Kind of a STAR 98.7 FM
vibe going here? The only standout here
is Kanye, though I wouldn't mind Maroon
5 picking this up (they are very hard working).
Who
will win: Honestly, I think all five
have a chance to win. If you had to twist
my arm (which you are not doing, but I'll
tell you anyway), I would go for Maroon
5.
Best
Rock Performance by a Duo or Group
Nominees:
Elvis Costello and The Imposters "Money
To Man," Franz Ferdinand "Take
Me Out," Green Day "American Idiot,"
The Killers "Somebody Told Me,"
U2 "Vertigo."
Who
should win: A lot of good artists here.
I would love to see Green Day walk off with
this one, but for pure catchiness I have
to give my vote to "Somebody Told Me."
Who
will win: Never bet against U2 at the
Grammy's. Never.
Best
Rock Album
Nominees:
Elvis Costello and the Imposters "The
Delivery Man," Green Day "American
Idiot," Hoobastank "The Reason,"
The Killers "Hot Fuss," Velvet
Revolver "Contraband."
Who
should win: "American Idiot."
Yeah, I'm biased. So kill me.
Who
will win: Green Day should walk away
with this one, though Velvet Revolver could
pull an upset.
Best
Alternative Album
Nominees:
Bjork "Medulla," Franz Ferdinand
"Franz Ferdinand," PJ Harvey "Ah
Huh Her," Modest Mouse "Good News
For People Who Like Bad News," Wilco
"A Ghost Is Born."
Who
should win: Modest Mouse. Hell, they've
toiled long enough to earn it.
Who
will win: Good news for people who
like bad news and Modest Mouse: they aren't
going to win! I'll give this one to Franz
Ferdinand, the most popular of the groups.
Best
Rap Album
Nominees:
Beastie Boys "To The Five Boroughs,"
Jay-Z "The Black Album," LL Cool
J "The Definition," Nelly "Suit,"
Kanye West "The College Dropout."
Who
should win: What the hell is LL Cool
J doing in this group? Man, I really liked
"To the Five Borough's" and "The
Black Album" but this one should go
to Kanye.
Who
will win: He's "retiring"
so this one will probably go to the Jay
to tha Z.
