 Prepare
for Job Fair
Career • Top,
last semester’s
job fair drew a big crowd,
whether
it was students looking
for a job or just freebies.
To
the right, Michelle Spalter,
dress for success, demonstrates
what would be an appropriate
outfit for an interview.
For interview, job, resume
advice and more, turn
to the special section
inside.

Interview clothes
Women • Senior
broadcast journalism major Michelle Spalter demonstrates what women should
wear to job interviews in the center left picture. To the left she appears
in her normal everyday clothing, while to the far bottom left, she wears
an outfit that may seem acceptable, but is not. In this case, Spalter’s
denim skirt is too short, which would not be considered acceptable in the
work place. Also, some companies do not allow open-toed shoes due to safety
regulations. Her button-up shirt and tie combo give her a professional look,
however.
Men • Ben Hooker, a senior journalism major, wears his normal
school clothes at right. He provides an example of the proper attire for a job
interview in the center left photo. He wears a not-quite-right outfit in the
far bottom right photo. While his button-up shirt is nice, jeans should only
be worn on casual Fridays, after he has begun working at the company. Jamie Rowe

Octsoberfest
Safety • The Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Program
at Cal State Long Beach hosted Octsoberfest Wednesday to focus on promoting
safer
partying, including tips to prevent date rape and car accidents, such as
always having a sober friend and sticking close to the group you went to
the party with.

Job
Fair
- Mock,
mock, whose there? Your
life
While
walking past the receptionist
who has confirmed a 10
a.m. interview for your
dream job, a flutter of
butterflies and the memory
of using platinum sweat
guard deodorant reminds
you that after shaking
hands with the company’s
recruiter, life as you
know it will ultimately
change for better or worse.
What’s a person to
do?
- Engineering
shortage offers graduates
ample opportunities
On
a campus with more than 35,000
students, the most popular
majors on campus may not be
the most popular majors on
campus may not be the most
needed.
- Companies
looking for experienced teamworkers
Students
for whom graduation is right
around the corner, knowing where
and how to apply for jobs can
be a daunting task. Yet students
are unsure of where to look,
or where to apply or better yet,
what companies are looking for.
- Maxson
remembers CSULB job interview
For
President Robert C. Maxson the
application process for the position
of president at Cal State Long
Beach was no walk in the park.
- Common
mistakes hinder new graduates
Going
through an interview can be nerve-wracking.
The spotlight is shining down,
the person on the other side
of the desk is frowning, and
you are wondering if your Volcom
T-shirt was the best thing to
wear.
- Tips
assist job hunters; foibles
not always hiring detriment
The
time has come for the infamous
arranged meeting of two or more
people known as the job interview.
Your palms sweat, your heart pounds
and when your interviewer
asks what goals you have you answer “Ummm, apple pie.” Sound familiar?
- Hauth
Center videotaping improves
interviewing skills
The Hauth Center for communication
skills at Cal State Long Beach
helps students conquer fears
of interviews and learn the
secrets of becoming a better
communicator.

Opinion
- Our
View: President needs charisma
and Beach Pride
As
everyone knows by now, President
Robert C. Maxson is retiring,
leaving behind a university
that collectively adored
and appreciated his constant
efforts.
- Dating
and rum-swigging do not mix — beware
At
17 I was asked out on my very first
date by the hottest, most bad-ass
boy at school. His name was Zack.
He was sexy and good-looking and
he knew it. He smoked two packs
of Marlboros a day and reeked of
cheap musk.
- Government
bureaucracy sweeps away blame
Bureaucracy,
thy name is government touts the
Republican Party in its usual coercive
fury, wanting to reduce the extent
and influence of the government
after having fought bitterly to
win executive control and majorities
in both houses.

-
M.I.A.:
Good beats, rapping needs
work
Move over Mya,
there is fresh new talent on
the rise. Maya
Arulpragasam, most commonly known
as M.I.A., has released her first
official album in April, called “Arular,” after
the success of her promotional
mix tape “Piracy Funds
Terrorism Vol. 1.”
- Apple
delivers mature brand of music
You
can count on Fiona Apple
to make fresh music while
staying true to the piano
driven throaty style to which
her fans have become accustomed.
- ‘American

through the lens
The Los Angeles
Getty Center presents “American
Visions,” a
special showcase of four
exhibits featuring some of
the finestphotographers
and memorable
images that span 75 years of American photography.
Sports
- Payroll
problems plague
playoffs
It
is October again and time for
a new baseball champion to be
crowned. One thing that did not
surprise anyone is the reoccurrence
of the same teams with a one-way
ticket to the Championships.
