UCLA drowns LBSU water polo

Long Beach State men’s water polo fell to UCLA at the campus pool Sunday. The 49ers lost 9-8, which is the seventh loss in a row, putting their record at 15-12 and 0-4 in the MPSF.

With the win, UCLA improved their overall record to 17-5 and 3-1 in the MPSF.

LBSU’s Jay Gerardi had four goals during the game and scored his first in the first quarter to put The Beach ahead 2-1. UCLA fought back and dominated in the second quarter by outscoring the 49ers 4-1.

Brett McCleave and Satoshi Sakata both scored in the third quarter, but the Bruins were relentless and John Blanchette gave UCLA a 7-5 lead.

The Bruins attacked early and scored two goals in two minutes to maximize the lead to 9-5. Gerardi scored the remaining three goals for the 49ers in the fourth quarter, which tied his career-high, but the 49ers lost 9-8.

LBSU’s goalie Thomas Onyshko tallied 10 saves, six of which came in the second half. Will Didinger had 9 saves for the Bruins.

Jay Gerardi had 4 goals in the game. Stefan Ludecke, Brad Scoles, Brett McCleave and Satoshi Sakata all had one for the Beach.

The men’s water polo team plays on the road at UC Davis Nov. 11, Pacific Nov. 12 and Berkeley Nov. 13.
