Scrimmage draws Long Beach community

The women’s 2005-06 basketball season is quickly approaching and the Black and Gold Scrimmage Saturday is one of the many festivities to come. The annual scrimmage is put on by the Fastbreak Booster Club and will take place in The Walter Pyramid Oct. 29.

The women’s team will have open practice from 9 to10:30 a.m. and then they will divide into teams and scrimmage each other from 11 a.m. to noon. Following the scrimmage, the Booster Club has organized a free barbecue from noon to 1 p.m. for anyone who attends. The Booster Club organizes the extracurricular activities for the team throughout the season.

Anybody is welcome to come because the day is an opportunity for fans, boosters, students and season ticket holders to meet the players and coaches. The Black and Gold Scrimmage day is a way to make a personal connection to the team and get to know the players better.

Jason Flowers has been the women’s basketball assistant coach for two years at LBSU and has been trying to promote the event in the community.

“ We had a good turnout last year from local high school teams,” Flowers said. “We have been trying to get the community involved and I am going to make some calls to local high schools and middle schools.”
Flowers is excited about the upcoming season and has high hopes for the young players including six freshmen and two sophomores.

“ I love my job,” Flowers said. “It is a great situation and I have good support. The facility is one of the best around.”
The women’s regular season begins with two exhibition games in The Walter Pyramid, Love and Basketball Nov. 1 and Team Concept Nov. 10.

“ We have a hard-working group,” Flowers said. “The have been doing a good job and we have a lot of newcomers that are hard-working and understanding. We expect to contend for Big West Champions as usual.”
