Guiding the 49ers to a 10-3 record and a 3-1 conference record, freshman midfielder,
Kim Silos, has been playing beyond expectations.
Silos has been stellar this season, scoring seven goals, one away from the
record set by Kelli Barrett in 1998, the programs’ first year of Big
West play.
Silos also earned Big West Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors after
scoring the winning goal in overtime two weeks in a row.
Silos, 18, is an undeclared freshman whose current focus is mainly on soccer. Growing
up in Ontario, Calif. and playing for Don Lugo High School, she didn’t
experience playing for a very competitive team.
Silos now realizes the differences between playing high school and club soccer
to playing at the collegiate level.
“
Playing club versus college is tougher because you have to be more mentally
prepared,” Silos said.
Being a first-year player and one of the youngest on the team, Silos believes
she’s “fitting in well” with the rest of the team.
“
I like the atmosphere and the sense of team unity. We’re really comfortable
with each-other,” Silos said.
Over the years Silos has emulated her game from former U.S. soccer player Veronica
Zepeda. Zepeda, who also plays the midfielder position, has been a role
model and also friend of Silos.
“
I’ve always looked up to her,” said Silos. The two met back
when Silos was playing club ball and Zepeda’s coach introduced them and
they kept in contact when Zepeda went to Santa Clara.
When she’s not practicing “double days,” two grueling practices
a day for a two week period, she enjoys watching basketball and “Friends”,
to get her mind away from soccer. Silos mentioned the “double days” really
pay off because she sees the improvement in her game.
Silos attracts much fan support to cheer her and the 49ers on. Her family
attends the majority of the games, ranging from her immediate family to even
her sister’s husband. With her recent success and a new record within
reach, she will be attracting a lot more fans than just her family. The
49ers are off to their best start at home and Silos is one of the main reasons
why.
