Long Beach State had the fans rocking at George Allen Field as the women’s
soccer team beat San Diego State 1-0 in double overtime Sept. 25. This was
the 49ers’ third consecutive tie after regulation and their second overtime
victory in a row.
There has been a buzz about the women’s soccer team and it showed when
the team played before a packed house at the George Allen Field last Sunday.
With the fans cheering wildly in the background, Kim Silos took a pass from
Haley Bolt from the right side and kicked it into an empty net to score the
winning goal in double overtime.
The fans roared as team members piled on each other in celebration. Silos scored
her second consecutive game winning goal in overtime, after scoring in overtime
to beat Fresno State Sept. 21.
“
It was all a team effort, we all wanted it really bad,” Silos said. With
her goal, LBSU extended its winning streak to eight games.
It was a hard fought game on both sides from the beginning. The Aztecs came
out strong, almost scoring on a header in the first minute.
There were many scoring opportunities by both teams, but excellent goal-keeping
kept the game scoreless. LBSU’s Sahar Haghdan got free on a breakaway
and almost broke the scoreless tie, but her shot sailed just over the net.
The crowd sighed as Haghdan dropped to her knees in disappointment.
San Diego State came very close to scoring on two corner kicks that almost
squeaked by goalkeeper Liz Ramos, but she was in top form and got the saves.
Ramos recorded another shutout and is currently ranked 12th nationally
in goals against average.
She has allowed only two goals all season. She is believed to be the first
49er goalkeeper to be nationally ranked in goals against average.
“
We played with a lot of heart, a lot of emotion, we executed our game plan,
and we pulled it off,” said Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia.
Assistant Coach Eddie Soto agreed, saying, “It was a great game, we had
a lot of chances, we finished strong in the end. The girls really dug down
deep and it was a great victory.”
LBSU improved their record to (7-1-1), while San Diego State fell to (6-5-0).
The 49ers record their sixth shutout of the season, just one shy of last year’s
record of seven and are unbeaten in eight straight games.
The 49ers women's soccer team plays at Pacific Sept. 30. The team travels to
CSU Northridge Oct. 2.
