Long Beach State’s women’s soccer team kicked off the season against the San Jose State Spartans yesterday and won 4-0. A moment of silence was taken on the George Allen Field before the match in honor of a Loyola Marymount University women’s soccer player who died and those who have suffered from Hurricane Katrina.

The 49ers started off strong with freshman Hayley Bolt heading the ball into the goal only five minutes into the game. Freshman Julie Megorden had the assist by taking the indirect kick.

San Jose State managed to hold the 49ers to that one goal until the 34th minute, when Bolt gave a quick pass to junior Liz Romo as she snuck by a Spartan defender to score. To finish the half, freshman Dana Farquhar crossed the ball to Romo for her second goal of the game.

The second half of the game brought frustration to the Spartans when they received multiple yellow cards, and LBSU continued to dominate.

"They kept their composure and positions, which allowed the frustration of the other team not to get to them," said Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia.

Ingrassia went on to comment about the upcoming season. "We are very excited about what is to come, and the many young players we will be able to accomplish lots," he said.

At the end of the second half, Romo had an unassisted goal and the 49ers won the game, 4-0. The women’s soccer team is now 1-1-0.

A preseason poll ranked LBSU No. 3 behind No. 1-ranked Cal Poly and No. 2-ranked Cal State Fullerton.

The women’s soccer team will play Idaho State this Friday, at 5 p.m. at George Allen Field.
