The iron women of the No. 24 ranked Long Beach State volleyball team got off to a slow start in the Walter Pyramid Saturday night, but they picked up steam and flattened the Sacramento State Hornets 3-2.

In only her second match at the Division 1 level, freshman outside hitter Quincy Verdin blasted 15 kills from the left side to lead The Beach.

“I was happy that Quincy was able to come in as an unproven and untried freshman and score a lot of points for us,” said 49er Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro. “That was big.”

Her presence continued into a heated game five, “I just went out there and I put as many balls away as I could,” said Verdin.

The crowd of 1,477 began the night shaking their heads in confusion as the Hornets (1-2) won the first game, 30-19, despite five kills from opposite Mariko Crum (14 kills on the night).

Hornet junior opposite Atlee Hubbard and sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Haupt secured the win with six kills apiece and assisting with a .333 attack percentage.

The 49ers evened the score, winning the game 30-24, after an impressive performance from Crimes and opposite Rosie Lewis with four kills each.

The Hornets charged back in game three to take a 2-1 advantage, after limiting the Beach to a .186 hitting percentage, despite the Beach carrying a 14-9 lead early in the game. The set ended 25-30 with two straight hitting errors by the 49er squad.

Verdin dominated game four with a series of hard-hitting swings and Verdin continued the pounding which led to a 29-24 lead which pushed The Beach into game five, and eventually won 3-2.
