Our View: Representative arouses mistrust

Our nation is in dire need of legislative change. The White House is suspected of grossly distorting intelligence surrounding the conflict in Iraq, people in Indiana and Kentucky need tornado disaster relief, soldiers are still fighting a controversial war and Hurricane Katrina victims still need serious assistance.

These are all important issues our legislators must address in order to maintain the safety and security of their constituents. But recently it has become apparent that the well-being of constituents is not the main concern for one local congressmen.

House Representative Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican for the California 46th District, has recently made it apparent his citizens are not a top priority.

An article in the Nov. 4 issue of the Los Angeles Times revealed Rohrabacher received $23,000 from a Hollywood producer in exchange for access to Washington.

Rohrabacher should focus on the needs of those he was hired to serve rather than pulling favors for some glitzy
Hollywood producers. Some of the areas Rohrabacher represents are low-income and are known for serious problems that need immediate attention, such as racial conflicts.

Long Beach, an area in the district, has become famous for its eclectic population that consists of many different cultures and lifestyles. Long Beach, and Southern California for that matter, contains all types of ethnicities and lifestyles imaginable.

Sadly, these different ways of life can conflict and many parts of our city have become infamous for gang-related activity and violence.

Although Rohrabacher represents some of the wealthier neighborhoods of Long Beach, the welfare of all of Long Beach residents is something every citizen in this city should be concerned about.

It is not only these cities Rohrabacher is accountable for. He also has been entrusted with the ability to grant or deny aid to other parts of the country.

Recently, other regions of the United States have experienced natural disasters that have been extremely destructive.

The wrath of the natural world has ravaged and rampaged.

It is the duty of every Congressional official to create legislation that protects and provides for the citizens of America.

Rohrabacher has been given the chance to make a real difference, to be a contributor for positive societal change.

Instead, he has squandered this great opportunity and catered to others while neglecting those who need his help the most.

California 46th District residents would be better served with a political representative dedicated to creating a better life not only within our district, but also around throughout the entire country, sea to shining sea.

Rohrabacher has made it clear in the district he serves that his true constituents are not his most important. He would rather bow down to the needs of wealthier people who can provide him with more lucrative benefits.

The citizens of California’s 46th District have been neglected and need a leader who will make important contributions to the people.

Thankfully, representatives in Congress serve relatively short terms, only two years. This is less when compared to other political positions like senators, who serve six- year terms, or the president’s four-year term.

If he is accepting contributions from Hollywood big shots, what else has the elected leader been doing wrong? How else may he betray the trust of a democracy that voted him in office?

Representative Rohrabacher will have to account for his mistake next November, allowing this disloyalty to remain fresh in the memory of many of his constituents.
