Foothill-South toll road affects everyone

The brief mention in the News in a Few section of the Nov. 7 Daily Forty-Niner about the effects of the Foothill-South toll road only mentions one part of the impact this roadway will have.

It won’t just affect surfers, it will probably have a negative impact on the only natural stream in the area and will probably result in the closure of the San Mateo loop campground portion of the San Onofre State Beach parkland.

State beach camping sites are already booked solid through the summer months and San Mateo is the only alternative to the over-populated San Clemente State Beach campground.

I should know. Two years in a row our family has been unable to get in to San Clemente and had to fall back to San Mateo. Without San Mateo we might as well sell our camping gear.

The Sierra Club has more information on this project and I would suggest readers get involved. State parkland belongs to the people of California, and any threat to it should affect us all.
