Don’t let others find God for you

In the recent article in the Sept. 28 of the Daily Forty-Niner issue by David Whisler “California’s gay marriage ban nonsenical,” I was reminded and upset by how often people attach characteristics or references to God that are not attributable to him.

I am upset not because I am angry with the people who are spreading falsities about God, but that these viewpoints do not represent truths about God.

Whisler tells readers to imagine that God hates you. Where does he get this belief from? The Reverend Fred Phelps, who talks not of a God of love but a God of hate?

I will not presume to tell you what to think or imagine about God. But I will challenge you to pick up the Bible, a book in which the main purpose is to tell of God’s glory and character, and see for yourself. I will suggest some verses to start with: Hebrews 10:23, 2 Corinthians 5:15, Matthew 19:4-6, John 14:2-3, and John 3:16.

Imagine this: Someone you do not know decides to make up fictional things about your personality and character to fit their ideologies and reasoning.

We, as humans, have no right to make up things to believe about God. Just as you would want that person to come and get to know you instead of make up details about you, go get to know God.

Do not just listen to what other people have to say about God. Go read the Bible. Get to know God for yourself. Make your own decisions. But do not assume things other people say about God are necessarily the truth.
