Gary & Co. Hair Design changes ownership, receives renovation

Gary & Co. Hair Design will experience a makeover as the campus salon and nail shop takes on new ownership after its founder retired.
Gary Davis, now the former owner of Gary & Co. Hair Design and CSULB alumnus, opened the salon in 1981. Davis he said he will miss the energy from the campus. He sold his business to salon manager Brandee Tilles. He said she officially took over the business Saturday.

Tilles plans to do a complete remodel of the salon. While planning to rename the business to Elektric Hair, she said two hair stations will be removed—leaving four—and three manicure stations and new countertops will be added.
She also plans to create a quarterly newsletter. Tilles said she has not given it a name, but wants it to spotlight the salon and her employees.

Tilles said she appreciates Davis selling her the business.

“ I thank him today for giving me the opportunity,” Tilles said. “He’s has been a successful business owner.”

As someone who has had experience with other businesses, she said she knows the salon has potential.

“ I think it is a great service to students,” Tilles said.

She said the purchase of the business and remodel will cost about $90,000, but the price for hair cuts may be lowered, with other services possibly remaining the same. The remodeling will begin in December.

The salon is located in the South Plaza on the second floor of the University Student Union. Businesses hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday. It is closed on weekends. However, when the remodel is complete, Tilles she plans to open the salon on Saturdays.
