In an effort to recruit prospective Associated Students, Inc. members, ASB committee
students from Lakewood High School were invited to Cal State Long Beach.
The event, dubbed “49er for a Day,” had the high school students
attend lectures, office hours and a tour of the campus to get a sense of the
university. Each was paired with an ASI committee member.
“
This is a way for the ASI to reach out to the city to show that we are a prestigious
university,” ASI President Jamie Pollock said. “CSULB is so close
to so many students and it doesn’t always get the recognition
it deserves.” In order to aid the problem, Pollock appointed Michael Barker
to assistant secretary for City Affairs/High School Outreach.
Barker is credited
with setting up the 49er for a Day event.
“
This is a way we can increase the awareness of the prestige that CSULB
has,” said Barker, who plans on extending the program beyond Lakewood High
School and farther into the surrounding Los Angeles area.
“
I’m looking forward to learning how college life is since it’s so
different from high school – there are [approximately 35,000] compared
to 5,000 students,” said Amanda Thyden, Lakewood High School student body
vice president.
In addition to attending lectures and office hours, the students also were able
to check out the Japanese Garden, the University Art Museum, and the University
Student Union.
“
Today was a success,” said Shelena McClinton, who along with Barker spent
a long amount of time coordinating the day’s events. “The student
who I was with actually made the decision to come to CSULB in the fall,” she
said.
“
Hopefully we can do this again next year.”
While a few fortunate students were able to meet President Robert C. Maxson,
most were surprised at how many students they saw walking around campus.
ASI wishes to continue the program in the future, targeting high school juniors
and seniors and members of their respective ASB committees.
