Wilson G. Bradshaw, one of the final four candidates who may succeed current
Cal State Long Beach President Robert C. Maxson, plans to become acclimated
to the university if chosen and is already beginning to understand Beach Pride.
“
Public higher education has a unique role that contributes to the community
and the involvement of individuals in the community,” Bradshaw said. “I
understand the pride at CSULB and the reason why individuals are proud to be
part of CSULB. It’s a proud institution and the purpose is to push the
institution to be even better.”
Bradshaw has an academic record as both an educator and administrator. With
a Ph.D. in psychobiology from the University of Pittsburgh, Bradshaw has been
the president at Metropolitan State University in Minnesota for the past five
years. Prior to being president, he was the provost and vice president for
Academic Affairs at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania; vice president and
dean of graduate studies and professor of psychology at Georgia Southern University;
and assistant dean of graduate studies at Florida Atlantic University.
Bradshaw has also been a psychobiology professor at Metropolitan State University,
and physiology instructor at Wright State University, School of
Medicine in Ohio and instructor of physiological psychology at the University
of Pittsburgh.
“
Having been a professor and an administrator, I think I have the qualities
and experience that it takes,” Bradshaw said.
Throughout his 27-year career, Bradshaw has taught a broad range of undergraduate
and graduate courses and has authored numerous publications.
Bradshaw said he chose to apply for presidency at CSULB because of the reputation
it upheld as an educational asset to the contribution and involvement in the
community.
“
This university is highly regarded and I am in no other search,” Bradshaw
said. “President Maxson had success and I know I can contribute to the
ongoing success.”
Bradshaw said he has come to learn the administrative structure at CSULB and
the reason for its success is because of the tremendously effective team effort
by all of the administration members.
He also said if appointed president any immediate changes would be premature
but he will come with an open mind.
“
There is a solid foundation provided by President Maxson and the rest of the
administration,” he said. “If elected, my short-term goal would
be to get to learn the character of the institution and based on that impression
then I can start making other goals.”
Students, faculty and staff are welcome to the see Bradshaw speak at the Associated
Students Student Government Office in the conference room from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
today in the University Student Union and from 3 to 4 p.m. today in the Horn
Center.
