The proposal to rename State University Drive to Beach Drive was passed unanimously
during last Wednesday’s Associated Students, Inc. meeting.
Jamie A. Pollock, current ASI President and CEO, has successfully passed the
plan of renaming State University Drive to Beach Drive. State University Drive
starts at Bellflower Boulevard on the west side of campus and ends at West Campus
Drive near the University Student Union.
“
It really wasn’t a definite plan,” Pollock said. “During
the summer, we were just wondering if there were ways to improve our campus
and one
of the ideas that came up was to rename State University Drive.”
In an effort to distinguish CSULB from many colleges and universities, Pollock
and other ASI members hoped to do away with the name “State University
Drive.” Deeming it “bland” and “boring,” Pollock
hopes to liven up the campus by renaming the street to what CSULB stands for:
beach pride. “I had been thinking about making the signs black and gold,” Pollock
described, “however, that can mean more money will be spent. Those
signs can be quite expensive.”
A ballpark range for replacing the signs falls around $800, however such figures
are not definite due to premature plans so far.
Sen. Heidi Chavez, College of Health and Human Services, presented Pollock’s
proposal in her absence at the meeting. The proposal was greeted with support
and passed unanimously.
“
Everyone thought it would be a great idea [to rename State University
Drive],” Chavez said. “Now all we have to do is contact the city
to have the sign on Bellflower Boulevard changed. Even better, we’re
going to try to get the city to provide our campus with those signs so the
university
will not have to spend any money to replace the signs.”
Despite overwhelming support, students are either indifferent or genuinely approve
of the proposal.
Marshaya Winston, a liberal studies major, said changing the street name will
not affect Beach Pride.
“
If a monument was built or we renamed a significant building on campus, then
it would have a greater impact on the students,” Winston said. “It
is just a street on campus that students drive on; no one will really be
full of Beach Pride just because a street was renamed.”
Matthew Perea, a criminal justice major, said renaming the street can have a
profound affect on the students at CSULB.
“It may be just renaming a street, but it is also renovating the campus,” Perea
said. “I think it would be great once the street has been renamed.”
Pollock is not the only ASI president to improve the campus. Toby Sexton,
ASI president during the 1999-2000 school year, managed to have “Go Beach” painted
on the Veteran’s Hospital water tower.
“
In a way, I want to leave something behind for future students to be proud
of,” Pollock said. “It’s always nice to come back in a few
years and say, ‘Hey, I did that for the campus.’”
The State University Drive signs on Bellflower Boulevard and on campus are scheduled
to be replaced by January 2006.
“
Hopefully [they will be replaced] in time as a gift for President Maxson before
his departure,” Pollock said.
