Students strolled around Friendship Walk yesterday visiting various booths
on the first day of Week of Welcome.
Cal State Long Beach mascot Prospector Pete greeted students who roamed the
event. Around noon the cheer teams performed to Green Day. President Robert
C. Maxson and Associated Students, Inc. President Jamie Pollock both made brief
speeches about Week of Welcome and Beach Pride. The dance team’s performance
followed the speeches.
To create excitement for the majority of Week of Welcome, K-Beach radio played
music in the background, such as ska, hip-hop and classic rock.
The Week of Welcome is an opportunity for clubs and organizations to recruit
new members. It occurs at the start of each semester for two to three consecutive
days.
Freshman Tina Tran said she was trying to see which sorority would be best
for her. She signed up for different organizations to keep her options open.
Some students joined groups because the group provides activities that resonate
with them.
“I enjoy the rich cultural Mexican heritage. It compliments my own Bolivian
culture,” said junior Heidi Dunham, who signed up for Group Folklorico
Mexica.
Other students joined groups for networking reasons.
Senior Anne Kratzer signed up to join the American Marketing Association because
she said, “The AMA seems like an organization that appeals to all students
studying many different areas. I expect my membership to look very impressive
on my résumé.”
Still others searched for groups for the camaraderie.
“Lambda Sigma Gamma is the sorority that appeals to me the most because
of the multicultural bond that I will be able to create with so many amazing
girls,” Tran said. “The fact that it is a sorority that focuses on
women and helping one another toward achieving a rewarding and memorable education
only supports my decision to rush even more.”
Members of the organizations came to spread word of their groups’ uniqueness,
such as junior Thao Nguyen of Sigma Phi Omega who said Week of Welcome is a
great opportunity to get the word out that, “Sigma Phi Omega is one of
the oldest sororities on campus, full of history and culture.”
Other groups like Delta Lambda Phi wanted to spread the word that their fraternity “is
a national social fraternity for gay, bisexual and progressive men,” as
the group’s president, senior Benny Lemaster said.
Week of Welcome provides groups with the chance to let students know about
their events. |
