L.B. Mayor Beverly O’Neill comments on CSULB, Maxson

“The city has prospered from having a four-year institution, and Cal State Long Beach has always
been such an important part of the community.”

“ [CSULB] is not a university on a hill that just stays there without being part of the city of Long Beach.
It’s an integral part of the city.”

“Maxson has brought a human [element] to the institution with his charismatic personality. He has absolutely become Cal State Long Beach.”

“ People have great respect for [his relationship with students] because that’s his goal in life. And with that comes all of the admiration of the community.”

“ Cal State Long Beach has become a distinguished institution under his leadership. He has raised the academic level, he has a wonderful relationship with corporations [and] donors that believe in the different schools they relyon for graduates. It is a college of choice.”

“ Everybody brings their own personality to [the presidency]. And you’re not going to have another
Bob Maxson, but he had some traits that I would look for in someone else—someone who has a personal interest, has a love for the institution, values people, values students and remembers that that’s what thejob is. And everyone else is there to support that goal. He will be hard to replace.”
