Two more movies that are opening this weekend

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe • This is the film adaptation of the second book in C.S. Lewis’ seven-volume “Chronicles of Narnia” series. The movie follows the four Pevensie children—Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy — as they travel through a magical wardrobe from a mansion in England to the mystical land of Narnia. Populated by talking beasts, centaurs, fauns, dwarves and giants, Narnia is under the rule of Jadis the White Witch. She has cast a spell over Narnia, keeping it always winter but never Christmas.

The Pevensie children join up with the lion Aslan, ruler of all talking beasts, to take on the White Witch and restore order.

The live-action Disney movie, directed by Andrew Adamson of “Shrek” fame, is rated PG for battle scenes and frightening moments.

Memoirs of A Geisha • This movie is based on the bestselling book, which was part of Oprah’s book club.
The film follows Chiyo, a young Japanese girl, sold by her father at a young age, through the perils of life as an apprentice geisha.

Suzukah Ogo plays the title character, later renamed Sayuri, who experiences a number of downfalls during her rise in becoming one of the most successful geisha in Kyoto, Japan. After World War II, her life changes significantly as the work for geisha becomes far different than before the war. In the end, she gets her ultimate wish, being taken care of by the man who was kind to her as a child.

Directed by Rob Marshall, the movie is rated PG-13 for subject matter and sexual content.
