Yeah, I know, I didn’t want to come back either, but here I am. Yeah,
textbooks are expensive, so arenew clothes. Here are some things that should
cheer you up: Good bands, decent prices and venues with full bars.
Flogging Molly, Darko Jones and Maxeen @ The House of Blues- Anaheim, Sept.
15
Flogging Molly is back in the Orange County with it’s Irish punk rock
style, while Darko Jones continues it’s quest to become big in the states
after blowing up in Britain. Maxeen, on the other hand, will just show up and
steal the show.
The Decemberists and Sons and Daughters @ The Glasshouse, Sept. 16
It’s hard to sit back and exactly pin point a sound for the Decemberists.
Emo, pop, alt-country, English degree driven pop? It’s all wrong. This
sound might be beyond pin pointing and after reading the OC Weekly’s
recent attempt, I’m not even going to try. Anyway, go see the show and
relish in probably the only rock show that you will attend that will be opened
with the sounding of a shofar.
The Bravery, Maximo Park @ The Galaxy Theater, Sept. 16
Wow. First the New Pornographers and now the Bravery play the Galaxy Theater
within a month. Did the Galaxy get hip now or something? Are they finally over
their dinosaur rock ways? Wait, the Black Keys are coming too?
KROQ Inland Invasion 5 @ Hyundai Pavilion, Sept. 17
All right, Inland Invasion 5 role call: Beck: show stealer; Bloc Party: your
hip friend probably likes them; the Bravery: was shockingly good at the Weenie
Roast; Cake: welcome back; Garbage: great live band, could be its last Los
Angeles show (if the breakup rumors are true); Jet: new album coming in Winter
should be very telling; Live: did they get a pity invite? Madness: new album
coming out; Oasis: never my thing but “Definitely Maybe” still
looked at as a classic; 311: you would think that after all these albums they
would sound a bit different; Weezer: let’s just pretend that “Make
Believe” never came out; and the Arcade Fire: worth going for on their
own. Not the greatest KROQ show, but seeing Beck, the Arcade Fire and Garbage
on the same bill is more than worth the ticket price. Oh, and I wouldn’t
be’surprised if the Arcade Fire happens to open for some giant band Nov.
1 and 2 at the Staples Center. I’m only saying.
Eudora @ Santa Fe Cafe, Sept. 17
Usually demo CDs suck. Most bands think they can slap together some garage
recordings and watch the execs fly in. Eudora, on the other hand, knows what
they are doing: their demo was clean, well-produced and very impressive with
a Senses Fail meets Saosin sound which I hear the kids go crazy for now-a-day’s.
They have mountains of potential, thanks especially to the singers’ soothing
yet scream worthy vocals and musicians reluctance to take the easy route with
anything they play. These guys are a lock for Warped Tour 2006.
Molotov @ The House of Blues, Anaheim, Sept. 28
The Spanish rockers … wait, come back here…I meant Spanish hard
rockers...cool, you stayed … will hit the House of Blues and hopefully
play that cover of Falco’s “Amadeus” that worked so strangely
well on the bands recent cover’s album.
My Chemical Romance, the Alkaline Trio and Reggie and the Full Effect @ the
Los Angeles Sports Arena, Sept. 30
I’m really starting to like everything about My Chemical Romance. Really,
what is to hate? They have a great album, great live show, an amazing video
for “Helena” and a rumored epic one for “Ghosts of You” and
now they pick the Alkaline Trio and Reggie and the Full Effect to open their
first headlining tour. Is it bad etiquette to jump on the stage and give them
a big kiss on the cheek? Get ready for punk rock dancers, songs about blood
and hell and grown men in bunny suits. This is the best show of the month. |
