Think

Re
"Gays are just making up rights,"
Opinion, March 17: Before anyone like --
Joshua Marshall -- starts running his mouth,
he should really research facts as they
are, as opposed to passing off his right-wing
ideals as facts. In March 2000, a majority
of California voters did affirm Proposition
22; this is the only fact within your statement.
Now, ask all those voters, including you,
just how long ago was it illegal for an
interracial couple to marry?
Was
it fact that the law prohibited a black
man to marry a white woman, or a black woman
to marry a white man? Does this, Joshua,
fit "your" definition of marriage?
The right to marry whom I love is mine,
whether it is a man or woman. You stated,
"It is the differences of a man and
a woman that make a marriage best serve
its purpose." You further went on to
state, "Marriage is defined in such
a way that best fits the purpose of creating
a family."
Why
don't you ask Britney Spears how much she
had to drink before she married her long
time friend on her drunken binge in Vegas,
what exactly was her purpose, or ask the
contestants on "Marry a Millionaire"
about the purpose of marriage, or their
definition of marriage. What about all the
thousands upon thousands of couples that
marry each year and don't or can't have
children, what about the couples who are
quite capable to have children and decide
not to? It's called "choice" and
every American has the right to choose what
best serves his or her purpose.
