Correction

The March 4 Our View "Abolish the Electoral College" used inconsistent figures to represent the connection between voter apathy and the Electoral College. The figures in some cases represented voter turnout among registered voters and in others represented voter turnout by voting age population. The correct figures for voter turnout among the voting age population in the most recent presidential elections for which figures are available are: United States, 2000, 49 percent; Mexico, 2000, 60 percent; South Korea, 1997, 92 percent; France, 1995, 72 percent. The United States uses an Electoral College while the latter three countries have direct presidential elections.
