Students Inc. is expected to vote on a proposal
to increase fees for student identification
cards at next week's Senate meeting.
Joe
Latter, associate vice president for finance
on campus presented a request that the Senate
take a formal stand on the issue of increasing
the ID card fee from $1 to $5.
A
student referendum is normally required
any time a mandatory fee is proposed. Due
to the fee increase amount and time limitations,
it was determined that the Senate vote on
the increase of the fee, rather than allowing
the students to take a vote.
The
increase set to take effect in fall 2004
is the result of a change in contractors
providing the identification services. A
recent decision by AT&T to discard its
service as provider for the university is
the main reason behind the increase. According
to Sen. Morgan Wheeler, bids from different
contractors had been looked at before signing
a contract with Blackboard, the company
that currently provides services for Beachboard.
However,
Harv Moreley, academic advisor, advised
against voting on the proposal before properly
informing the students of the increase.
"Whether
or not the Senate votes on the fee increase,
students should be advised that the fee
will take place," Moreley said.
The
decision was thus postponed for next week's
Senate meeting in order to give members
the time to diffuse the information to Cal
State Long Beach students.
