State:

• SACRAMENTO (AP) -- California, the nation's leader in police pursuits, would impose a statewide policy severely restricting such chases under a bill advanced on a 4-1 vote by a Senate committee Tuesday.

• SACRAMENTO (AP) -- All California high school students would be required to take courses currently required only for college-bound students starting in 2010, under legislation introduced Tuesday.

• LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mayor James Hahn on Tuesday proposed a $5.3 billion budget for the nation's second-largest city that would boost funding for police while eliminating 300 jobs, some of which are currently filled.

• LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Seven Holocaust survivors and four relatives of victims of the World War II genocide filed suit against an Italian insurance company they claim has not paid full benefits.

• SACRAMENTO (AP) -- After tooling across a university campus in a Toyota Highlander propelled by a clean-burning hydrogen engine, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared Tuesday that California will have a network of stations offering the pollution-free fuel up and down the state within six years

• SACRAMENTO (AP) -- An Assembly committee Tuesday approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in California, although the bill's sponsor said such a ''milestone event'' didn't change what will be a difficult fight to pass it in the full Legislature.

• PALMDALE (AP) -- A man who family members believe was upset over a possible separation with his wife shot his two daughters in his home before killing himself, authorities said.

• SACRAMENTO (AP) -- The California Highway Patrol has started a major crackdown on state residents illegally driving vehicles with out-of-state plates.

 

National:

• ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. said Tuesday his half-billion-dollar public financing plan for capital improvements and economic development is an important step toward tribal self-sustainability.

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- Three environmental groups launched a campaign Tuesday to defeat President Bush and support Democratic candidate John Kerry, with plans to pinpoint voters in four battleground states where the environment is considered a priority.

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hispanics in the United States view Spanish-language news media as important to their community and more likely than English-language media to portray them positively, according to a survey.

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- Citing a dire need to protect ocean resources from exploitation and pollution, a presidential commission on Tuesday urged creation of a federal oceans trust fund with up to $4 billion a year from oil and gas royalties.

 

International:

• HANOI, Vietnam (AP) -- Vietnam said Tuesday it wants to build stronger relations with neighboring Asian countries and that a recent spat over the disputed Spratly Islands would not deter that process.

• BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Iraqi leaders have set up a tribunal of judges and prosecutors to try ousted dictator Saddam Hussein and other members of his Baathist regime, a spokesman announced on Tuesday.

• PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- Police fired tear gas and U.S. Marines blocked the entrance of the police academy in the Haitian capital on Tuesday as hundreds of candidates stormed the building during a recruiting drive.

• BEIJING (AP) -- A government spokesman Tuesday dismissed suggestions that China censored a speech by Vice President Dick Cheney during a recent visit, saying any deletion of remarks was due to editing in the state media.
