Karaoke contest to give students a chance to shine

If you think you could be the next Kelly Clarkson or Ruben Studdard, now is your chance to showcase your talents at the Associate Students Inc.-hosted K Beach Celebrity II event Thursday, May 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the University Student Union Beach Auditorium.

The event is a karaoke-style singing contest, much like "American Idol."

Tryout dates will be Tuesday, April 20 at The Nugget, Wednesday, April 21 at the Press Room, Tuesday, April 27 at The Nugget, and Wednesday, April 28 at the Sunset Lounge from 7-9 p.m.

The only requirement to enter the contest is to be a Cal State Long Beach student.

Students can bring their own music for the tryouts or choose from the catalog provided by A.S.I. will provide. There will be a monitor for the words at the tryouts only, in the final the contestants will have to memorize their songs.

Prizes will include a Karaoke machine, a $200 shopping spree, studio time and other prizes.

"It's been very entertaining," Brian Stires, press secretary for A.S.I., said. "Anyone who has enjoyed "American Idol" should come out and watch or participate in this event."

This is the second year the event has taken place.

The K Beach media department led by John Trapper put on last year's K Beach Celebrity event.

"He was the one that kind of took the karaoke night idea and almost instantly turned it into a competitive event," Ronald Canfield, who is behind this year's event said. "He put it on [in Fall 2002] and it turned out pretty good. The winner from last time, Sarah Goncalves, is on the entertainment commission this year and has been pushing the event for this year, so we did it."

Canfield said students should come out to support friends and participate in voting for the winner.

"We are giving away killer prizes and everything is free to both contestants and spectators," Canfield said, " We are also having a raffle and free give-a-ways for the audience to win."

K Beach Celebrity II is a student government funded event.
