Robin Miramontes has led the women's volleyball
team back into the top-25 with a perfect
3-0 start. She was named the Big West Conference
Player of the Week, which is why she is
our Nugget in the Rough this week.
It
was raining kills all weekend long for Miramontes,
who is hoping to pick up the slack for the
injured senior Erika Chidester. The 49ers
are looking to rebound from a lackluster
2003 season, and Miramontes figures to be
a key ingredient to doing that.
The
sophomore outside hitter posted a team-best
15 kills and career best eight digs to lead
the No. 23 49ers over previous No. 24 Utah
on Saturday. She opened the season with
a career-high 20 kills, including seven
digs and four blocks against Northeastern
Sept. 1.
Miramontes
didn't stop there as she posted 11 kills
and a career-high three service aces to
lead the 49ers over Liberty in straight
sets last Friday night. She leads the team
in kills per game with 3.83 and attack percentage,
.326.
Last
season Miramontes earned her spot in the
lineup after being forced to redshirt in
the 2002 season with an injury. Miramontes
averaged 2.19 kills per game and earned
a spot on the Big West Conference All-Freshman
Team. She had double-digit kills in nine
matches, including a career-best 19 kills
against UC Irvine on Oct. 11.
Miramontes
was a three-sport athlete in high school.
She earned varsity letters in volelyball,
track and one in basketball. She was named
the Baseline Leaue MVP in 2001, first team
All-CIF, first team all-league as a senior
and the Inland Valley's Player of the Year
by the Daily Bulletin and Inland Valley
Times.
