The
49ers Ice Hockey Team showed a lack of
discipline and desire Thursday night as
they faced San Jose State for the second
time this season.
LBSU
had hoped to avenge the 3-1 loss they
suffered last month in San Jose, but the
Spartans would hear nothing of it. SJSU
made it painfully obvious they were the
team who deserved the win with a decisive
7-2 victory over the Beach.
The
Spartans came out firing, out-shooting
The Beach 11-5 in the first period alone
and 37-14 for the game. Despite eleven
shot attempts, the 49ers defense backed
by goaltender Mike Bergman held SJSU scoreless
to end the first period in a 0-0 tie.
The
first goal of the game came just over
six minutes into the second period. Michael
Villalobos found the back of the net for
the Spartans. SJSU also claimed the second
goal of the game at 11:32 to make it 2-0
with one period remaining.

It
appeared as though the 49ers had found
the necessary adrenaline to fuel their
offense as Alex Florio and Ben Mitchell
found Matt Schultz for the first LBSU
goal of the game at 16:05.
Unfortunately,
the 49ers' goal seemed to serve as fuel
for the Spartan offense. Over the next
eight minutes, SJSU went on a four-goal
scoring spree.
Although
the win was now out of reach, the 49ers
continued to skate hard and fight for
dignity on their home turf. With 1:48
left to play, 49er Pete Kotowski scored
off a pass from Kevin Lighter to make
the score 6-2.
LBSU
Head Coach John Cacciatore scheduled a
scrimmage for Friday against the Bay City
Bombers. The Bombers have a fifth-place
ranking in the Western States Hockey League.
It
looked like a completely different team
was on the ice Friday night for the 49ers.
After
a scoreless five-minute sudden death period,
the game was sent into a shoot out. 49er
back-up goaltender Duncan MacEwan deflected
three out of five during the shoot out.
LBSU
out scored the Bombers 3-2 in the five-man
shoot out. Kevin Lighter, scored his first
goal of the season, followed by Schapmire,
with his second of the game and Kotowski
with the game-winner.
"If we played like we did tonight,
against San Jose, we would have won,"
Schultz said.
This
weekend the 49ers will be away in Utah,
where they will face Utah State, BYU and
Weber State.
