Wiegand's header gives Ingrassia, 49ers win in season opener

It was a weekend of firsts for the women's soccer team.

First game coached at Cal State University Long Beach by Mauricio Ingrassia.

First women's soccer game televised at CSULB.

And, most importantly, the first time the women won the opening game of the season since becoming a Big West team in 1998.

Allison Wiegand's header in the 64th minute helped the 49ers and Ingrassia kick off the season with a 2-1 victory over the Sacramento State Hornets at George Allen Field Friday in front of 225 fans.

It was the seniors 15th career goal and 36th career point, which ranks fourth all-time at CSULB.

The game winner for the 49ers (1-0-1) came just over a minute after the Hornets' (0-1-0) Jennifer Iha tied the game from eight yards out.

"[Ingrassia and I] are still getting to know the girls," assistant coach Eddie Soto said. "And that was an example of what kind of character we have…we could have put our heads down and went into overtime."

The 49ers fired off 13 shots in the game and the defense proved to be stingy as they held the Hornets to just four shots.

The 49ers jumped out to a quick start as they had three shots over the first seven minutes, including Kristin Travis' goal from 10 yards out at the 7:12 mark to give CSULB a 1-0 lead.

The Hornets were held without a shot for the first 20 minutes of the game. The team had a chance to tie the game in the 86th minute with a direct kick from 25 yards out, but the ball bounced off the 49er wall and led to one of eight corner kicks on the day for the 49ers.

Meghan Harwyk posted two saves as goalie for the 49ers. Harwyk has a minor quad strain, but is day-to-day, according to Soto.

The 49er defense and goalie Tara Gotthardt fended off the 16-shot attack by the University of San Francisco Sunday as the two teams settled for a 0-0 tie.
Gotthardt had a career-best nine saves in the 110-minute match.

USF took the 49ers by storm in the first half of the match firing off nine shots to the 49ers' two. Gotthardt saved six of those shots.

"She came in and did what she needed to do," Soto said of Gotthardt. "She made some big time saves to keep the game tied."

Both teams had a shot at breaking the tie in the second overtime of the match. USF's Shuree Hytatt's shot went wide of the goal while Kristin Travis' fifth shot of the match was stopped by USF goalie Stephanie Beall. Beall had seven saves in the game.

The match will be replayed on Comcast Channel 3 on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The women's soccer team is back in action this weekend when they host the second Annual 49er Classic at George Allen Field. The 49ers will play at 5 p.m. against Drake Friday and at 1 p.m. against Iona Sunday.
