Sports section turning over a new leaf in the fall

By Michael Bower
Sports Editor

Finally, just what we have all been waiting for, school to begin and the NBA season to end.

OK, maybe the NBA thing is just me, but everyone should be excited about Long Beach State athletics this fall.

The women's volleyball team is looking to rebound from a lackluster season last year while the women's soccer team is looking to continue its march toward a Big West Conference championship under new head coach Mauricio Ingrassia.

Cross Country will also be in action along with the men's water polo team. The men's and women's basketball teams will kick off their seasons in November.

Fall is sure to be an exciting semester for sports on the Long Beach campus and the Online 49er is hoping to bring you the most up-to-date coverage possible. If you cannot make an event—don't worry—we will.

The sports section of the Online 49er will have many new additions this semester. Most of all, I want to get you, the reader, involved with the sports page, which is why any comments, questions or opinions on the sports page or Long Beach State athletics will be welcomed. If you have an opinion on how a team is playing or a coach is coaching send it to sportsd49er@yahoo.com, and some e-mails may be chosen to appear in print.

The sports staff will also be selecting an Athlete of the Week, which will appear in print every Thursday. We are currently brainstorming a name for our Athlete of the Week piece. If you have any suggestions e-mail them to sportsd49er@yahoo.com.

A special 49er Mail Box section will also be a new addition to the sports page. This piece will consist of answers to questions which are e-mailed in from readers. Not all questions can be responded to, but the sports staff will do its best to get to all it can.

The sports staff on the Online 49er is looking to keep the reader as informed as possible. We always like to hear positive feedback, but negative feedback is appreciated as well.

I hope the sports section of the Online 49er becomes your first source of information for Long Beach State athletics. I am looking forward to an exciting semester of sports here at Long Beach State, and to making the sports section in the Online 49er a part of your everyday activities.
