Travis sets record in 49ers' win

Long Beach State women’s soccer (4-3-1) passed several milestones last Friday as they defeated South Dakota State (2-5-0) 3-0 on the opening day of the Blue Jay Classic in Omaha, Nebraska.

The win marked the end of a three-game losing streak for the 49er women. LBSU tallied goals in the 30th, 55th and 82nd minutes. The Beach bombarded the Jackrabbits with 34 shots for the contest, breaking the previous 49er record of 27 shots in a game, set last year when LBSU defeated Iowa State, 3-1.

Travis drove a single-game record nine shots, including a goal and an assist. Travis has now surpassed her point total from all of last year, with seven. Travis’ 23 career points places her ninth all-time, while her seven assists (tied for sixth) and eight goals (tied for 12th) are also amongst the all-time greats.

Midfielder Allison Wiegand (Modesto) scored the first goal at the 29:34 mark off a free kick from Amy Leipham to give the Beach a 1-0 lead at half time.

South Dakota State was held without a shot in the first half, and did not take their first shot until the 55th minute. SDSU had just five shot attempts in 90-minutes of competition.

The 49er’s backline has been strong all season, allowing one or fewer goals in five of seven contests this season. LBSU goalkeeper Tara Gotthardt (Pleasanton) benefited from the team’s backline, posting her third shutout of the season and fourth shutout playing for Long Beach State.

Freshmen Midfielder Hilary Goldberg (Woodbridge) recorded the first goal of her college career at 54:06. Goldberg scored off a cross from Senior forward Kristin Travis (Davis) to make it 2-0. LBSU ended the scoring at 81:44 when Travis scored off her own deflected rebound.

Prior to leaving for Omaha, LBSU goalkeeper Tara Gotthardt said, "Our defense is solid, we need to take more shots." The 49ers did just that. In the first half alone, the 49ers took 16 shots on goal, one shot short of tying the highest number of shot attempts in a single game this season.

The team continued the scoring drive in the second half with another 18 shots. The 49ers out shot the Jackrabbits 34-5 for the contest, a huge feat to overcome considering that the 49ers have been ou tshot by all but one opponent so far this season.

The win also gives the 49er women their first road win of the season. LBSU started out the season 3-0-1, recording three shutouts against Sacramento State, Drake and Iona.

As the 49ers embarked on a seven game road trip, encompassing 5,700 miles, they dropped three consecutive games to Duke, Hawaii and the University of San Diego.

The Beach opens up Big West play this Friday at UC Santa Barbara, and closes out the road trip on California’s central coast as they face Cal Poly on Sunday.
