Students have an active option with sports teams

There is no easier way to meet people and stay in shape than getting involved in intramural sports on the Cal State Long Beach campus – and best of all – it is cheap.

"It's just another way for [students] to get involved," Intramurals Director Glenn McDonald said. "We've seen so many young men and women come in here and not know anyone at all, and they come in here and meet so many people."

For just $10 any student can sign up as a free agent to participate in any of the fall intramural sports offered at CSULB. A free agent is a student who wants to play a sport, but does not have a whole team, and will be added to a team. Sign ups will begin Aug. 30 in the Gold Mine at the Recreation Center.

McDonald is excited to introduce a new sport to this year's long list of intramural activities – dodgeball.

"It is just something that is starting to be a little craze," McDonald said. "It is basically because of the movie that came out. There have been students that have called down here and wanted to see if we were going to have dodgeball."

The movie "Dodgeball," starring Ben Stiller, took dodgeball from a game played in elementary school to a game played by adults on television.

McDonald said for the fall semester there is going to be a dodgeball tournament held to see how much interest there actually is in the sport before a league is organized. He said if it is a big hit then the department will definitely have a dodgeball league in the spring. The date for the tournament has not yet been determined, but students can begin signing up Aug. 30.

If students have not yet captured the dodgeball craze then there are still plenty of other leagues to sign up for. Team costs vary between $50 and $125.
• Three-on-three basketball
• Team tennis
• Softball
• Co-ed volleyball
• Co-ed softball
• Six-feet & under basketball
• Soccer
• Basketball
• Women's basketball
• Co-ed soccer
• Flag football

All the rosters for the leagues are due by Oct. 24. Leagues begin as early as Oct. 30. Teams will have games once a week in the Gold Mine or soccer field, and some championship games could be played in The Pyramid.

If a game once a week is too much commitment then students will have the option of participating in tournaments. Tournaments being offered include:
• Three-on-three basketball
• Soccer
• Free throw shooting contest
• Three-point shootout
• Racquetball
• Badminton
• Golf
• Sand soccer

Tournament dates have not been determined yet. Students can sign up at the recreation center in the Gold Mine where more information will be available on beginning dates.

JOIN A CLUB

Joining a sports club can be a great substitute for former high school and junior college athletes who are not able to play on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) team. Some clubs hold tryouts and students are not guaranteed a spot on the club team, which makes it a bit more serious than intramural sports.

CSULB has many sport clubs to offer students. If students are interested in signing up for any of the following clubs below they should contact Rita Hayes, the student life and development advisor, at (562) 985- 7351 or students can stop by her office in the Gold Mine.

• Jiu Jitsu club
• Aikido club
• Women's club soccer
• Roller Hockey
• Men's crew
• Outdoor adventure club
• Shotokan karate
• Surfing
• Men's volleyball
• Archery
• Women's crew
• Men's rugby
• Ski and snowboard team
• Tae Kwon Do
• Women's volleyball
• Bowling
• Ice Hockey
• Sailing Association
• Men's club soccer
• Triathlon team
• Water ski and Wakeboard
• Ultimate Frisbee club

Students looking to join a gym do no have to look any further than the campus. Frog's Club One is located beneath The Pyramid and offers a discount to CSULB students. CSULB students pay a $95 registration fee and then monthly dues of $32 to use the club's weight room. A day pass can be purchased for $15 and just $10 with a student I.D. For more information on memberships, contact Frog's Club One at (562) 985-5950.

Southern California Sport Complexes and Ticket Information

Southern California is the place to be if students are looking to attend a professional sporting event. Los Angeles and Orange County are the homes to some of the most successful sporting franchises in the world.

Both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Anaheim Angels are in the hunt to capture division titles and move onto the playoffs, which makes Southern California baseball the hottest ticket in town right now.

Angel tickets can be purchased by calling (714) 634-2000. Dodger tickets can be purchased by calling (323) 224-1-HIT.

The Staples Center, which is located in Los Angeles, is home to five professional sports franchises including the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Avengers and the Los Angeles Sparks.
