Bush's
cabinet is dropping like flies
Secretary
of State Colin L. Powell has resigned
from President George W. Bush's cabinet.
This opens up another position for Bush
to fill, likely with more of his friends,
not necessarily the most qualified. Six
of 15 cabinet positions have been vacated
since Bush took office in his second term.
Powell
is not the only one leaving, the Secretaries
of Agriculture, Energy and Education have
also submitted their resignation notices.
Perhaps they simply cannot handle the
Bush Administration for four more years.
Powell
has worked hard to gain international
support for Bush's actions, but is fighting
a nearly losing battle. There is speculation
that he will be replaced by Condoleezza
Rice.
We
will find out later this week if the rumors
are true. Rice was recently in the spotlight
for testifying to the 9/11 Commission
regarding the terrorist attacks.
Since
nearly half of Bush's cabinet is leaving,
it is doubtful they will get much done
during this next month. Powell has fought
that sentiment by stating that he will
work effectively until his replacement
is sworn in, but in reality it will be
difficult because the rest of the cabinet
is awaiting his departure.
Powell
has defended Bush's plan to invade Iraq.
Last year he told the U.N. Security Council
that weapons of mass destruction were
being created, though none have yet been
found. He has continued to defend that
statement.
Since
Bush's cabinet is dropping like flies,
replacements are needed, and Bush has
a habit of choosing his friends. For once,
maybe he will choose someone qualified
for the job, and not necessarily his best
friend from way back. But don't hold your
breath.
