Event scores touchdown for charity

Despite unrelenting rain and a temperature of only 50-degrees, several sororities came out in force on Sunday morning to compete in the first ever Holiday Bowl to benefit Toys for Tots.

The bowl consisted of a tag football tournament that soon turned into a muddy free-for-all.

"We're getting dirty, we're getting hurt, it's awesome," Alexis Brashier of Sigma Kappa said.

The event was organized and sponsored by Theta Chi. "We went out of pocket for food and trophies; the girls just have to bring toys in order to compete," President John "Moose" Bevis said.

The trophies were awarded to the winner of the tournament, and to the sorority that made the largest donation of toys.

Competing sororities included, from Cal State Long Beach, Sigma Kappa, Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Phi. The Phi Sigma Sigma chapter from Chapman University also attended. "We thought it would be fun to open this up to teams from other schools as well," Bevis said.

Sigma Kappa arrived at 8 a.m. and held several practice scrimmages before the other teams showed up.

After a few rain-soaked hours, the tournament wrapped up around noon, and the teams retreated to the warm and dry Theta Chi house for food and the awards ceremony.

Alpha Phi won the trophy for the largest toy donation, and Sigma Kappa's hard work and dedication paid off when they received the tournament trophy.

"It was totally worth it because it was for charity," Veronica Arbelaez of Sigma Kappa said, "and for Theta Chi, these are my boys and I love them."
