The Grub Guide

"No shirt? No shoes? No problem" — reads the sign outside Secret Spot in Sunset Beach. — On a corner, beside the bustle of Pacific Coast Highway, sits another hand-painted sign. It says: "Kind grub and super juices — Secret Spot," with an arrow pointing towards a strip mall behind a gas station.

With fast food on every corner, it's amazing to find a quick-food option with soul in Orange County. Secret Spot is a favorite among local surfers, yuppie health-types, and curious tourists alike. With its cozy location off of PCH, it's a sensible choice for commuters heading north.

The decor is under constant change — walls are adorned with posters of surfers and original art. A mural of a perfect point break peels its way beneath the counter. Well-kept plants are living in the dining room, including a couple of blooming orchids on one of the three tables inside the small shop.

The Secret Spot menu was recently updated to include more wraps. Although the fresh juice smoothies are popular with the morning crowd, the food is well worth a try. The Tahitian Trio — a smoothie with pineapple juice, mangos and bananas — is scrumptious. Five bucks can still get you a full stomach of wholesome grub at this little surf joint. Options range from the Grilled Garlic Veggie Turkey wrap to Pineapple Teriyaki Tacos.

Their ingredients are fresh and organic, and the menu includes dishes for vegans and vegetarians. The musical selection inside is better than any restaurant in OC. It's nice to eat while listening to classic roots reggae and jazz hip-hop instrumentals — definitely not something you'll hear at the Subway next door. While you're there, give the Geeky Meeky a try. It's a massive burrito filled with grilled mushrooms, onions, Serrano chilies, black beans and cheese. It's served with chips and a cup of the best salsa in a ten-mile radius.

If you wake up early, check out the breakfast menu. The Avocado Breakfast Burrito comes thick with potatoes, tofu, onion, salsa, avocado and a secret hot sauce. They even have a water cooler with free water.

Secret Spot — 3801 Warner Av., (562)592-4494, open Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.to 10 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Food $4 to $7, smoothies and juices $4.
