The
Queen Mary is featuring an "All That
Jazz" photography exhibit along with
Jazz Nights musical performances in the
Art Deco Observation Bar through Sept. 21.
The
exhibition consists of more than 100 photographs
capturing the jazz scene and features both
pioneer and contemporary jazz musicians.
It gives viewers a glimpse into the history
of jazz music and musicians, including Ray
Charles, Rosemary Clooney, Roy Hargrove,
Doc Cheatham, Terry Blanchard and Lionel
Hampton, from 1930s to present time.
Exhibit
producer Bill Sallette said the purpose
of the exhibition is "to honor the
musicians and the music and expose the general
public, young and old to this original American
art form."
The
exhibition also reflects jazz as an African-American
contribution to the American music that
has grown beyond its roots to become an
international art from surrounding musicians
of many cultures and nationalities.
"It's
the first time a major exhibition like this
has been done on the ship, which is entirely
metals, so the whole the process of
installing, and making sure photos stay
in place has been a challenge for us and
learning experience as well," Sallette
said. "We are reaching to all college
and university in music departments to get
their people, hopefully a lot of Cal State
students, to come down here."
Lloyd
Rucker is one of the jazz photographers
whose work is displayed at the exhibition.
He has been a personal jazz
photographer for Lionel Hampton for almost
30 years, travelling with the band to gigs
in Japan, France and England.
"From
all my travels around the world when I look
at the audience, there are usually no students.
Who is going to continue the music?"
Rucker said. "So, in order to reserve
it, Mr. Hampton and myself decided to go
back to get elementary and high school kids
and expose them to it. Then, the music will
be taken care of."
Jazz
Nights are held every Wednesday and Thursday
in the Art Deco Observation Bar to provide
sounds to go along with the sights of the
photo exhibition. On Thursday, the Bill
Madison Quartet, played "Invitations"
by Kaper, "Blues in Bb" by Sonny
Rollins and "Round Midnight" by
Thelonious.
