tennis sweeps UTEP, Portland

University
of Portland had no chance against the 49ers
Saturday as Long Beach State swept the Pilots
7-0 to move the tennis team record to 9-5
for the season.

play as she dispatched Portland’s Amy Juppenlatz
6-1, 6-1. With the win Kovalchuk has extended
her unbeaten streak in singles matches to
seven games and has not been defeated in
the No.1 singles spot this season.
Kovalchuk’s 49er teammates joined her to
sweep all six singles matches.
Laura Thomas defeated Kaori Tanabe 6-2,
6-4. In the third singles match, 49er Lindsey
Marvel stopped Sanja Indic 6-1, 6-1, while
Claudia Argumedo had little trouble finishing
Alyson Tyson 6-1, 6-1 in the No.4 singles
match.
Kelly Chan put two strong sets together
to rout Portland’s Kelle Menke 6-1. 6-1
and freshman Alanah Carroll continued her
stellar play as she won her No.6 match 6-0,
6-2 over Diedre Ring-Marrinson.
The win for Carroll has made it nine consecutive
singles matches without a loss, while Chan
has now won six out of her last seven singles
matches.
Long Beach State also made it a clean sweep
in doubles play, winning all three matches.
The 49er duo of Marvel and Kovalchuk continued
to roll as they beat Juppenlatz and Indic
8-3. In the second doubles match Laura Thomas
and Kelly Chan matched the performance of
Kovalchuk and Marvel as they bested Tanabe
and Tyson 9-7 in a hard fought match.
Argumedo and Carroll then capped the sweep
with an 8-0 drubbing of Portland’s Menke
and Ring-Marrinson in the final doubles
match.
In other tennis action 74th ranked LBSU
also dispatched the University Texas at
El Paso tennis team 7-0 Thursday at the
49er Campus Courts.
The Beach has now won nine of its last 11
matches and has gone 4-0 against Big West
conference opponents in that span. The 49ers
return to action this Thursday against Boise
State at the 49er Campus Courts.
